SCORPIONS

By Nancy Halmon, Personnel Director

We have had several inquiries about the severity of scorpion stings to cats. Below are several informative tidbits of useful information on the subject of Austin’s scorpions.

Austin scorpions are not deadly.

Usually there is no more pain or swelling than a bee sting.  Often anti-inflammatory or pain medications can be useful to treat this and could be prescribed by your veterinarian.

bullet

DO NOT give Tylenol to a cat (This could be deadly!)

Scorpions tend to come indoors at various times of the year but the most common time is August – October

Areas with heavy construction tend to experience more scorpions.

Allergic reactions are rare, but can occur.  If you suspect an allergic reaction because you see hives or asthma-type symptoms, take your pet to a veterinarian immediately!

A client also gave us some additional information about scorpions.  They usually come inside for moisture.  If you start noticing them in your house, it is helpful to place a couple of shallow dishes of water, outside, around the foundation of the house.  For example, a tin pie plate, with the rim even with the ground, will do the trick.  This will help keep most of them at bay.  If your house’s construction is pier-and-beam, place the dishes underneath the house.

This client actually tried it when she lived in the Lake Travis area.  She said she used to have scorpions EVERYWHERE and this helped a lot.  It didn’t keep all of them out, but the number seen in the house definitely decreased.
